There was only one store I wanted to go to in New York — and that was Salter House.

I’ve had a nightgown fixation ever since I was a little girl. I love everything spooky, haunted, possessed — can I say that? (I rebuke all negative energy, though, just in case.)They also have a lot of homeware: ceramics by other artists, delicate kitchen tools, and beautiful mundane objects. I’ve ordered from their online store a few times, but seeing it in person was something else entirely.

The shop itself is so well curated — every corner has something to look at. It actually reminded me of some of the small, layered shops I’ve wandered through in Korea. I already own some of their pyjamas and nightgowns, but I tried on a few pieces I didn’t have. I was aghast — in the most pleasant way — at how wonderful one nightgown felt on. It was… spectral.

I also picked up a pair of soft cotton shorts and a few other things, including a pair of scissors, simply because they were beautiful.

Some things are simply meant to be tried on in person — ghostly cotton, spectral lace, things with past lives and future moods. Salter House is more than a store. It’s a setting. A wardrobe for the haunted and the homebound. For girls who love scissors too beautiful to use, and gowns that feel like portals.
